Arsenal news: William Saliba gives Marseille message as Mikel Arteta sent transfer warning

William Saliba has sent Arsenal a message about his future as his loan spell at Marseille comes to an end.

The centre-back has returned to France this season where he has been very impressive for Marseille, who sit in second place in the Ligue 1 table. And Saliba has now spoken about his future – with it being far from certain that he will stay at the Emirates beyond this summer.

It comes as Mikel Arteta has been sent a warning about his star players – and what he must do to keep hold of them. And the Arsenal manager’s decision to hand Martin Odegaard the Arsenal captaincy has been praised as a “masterstroke”.

Arteta ‘masterstroke’ hailed

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Mikel Arteta’s decision to give Martin Odegaard the Arsenal captain’s armband was a “masterstroke”.

Goals from centre-backs Rob Holding and Gabriel delivered a 2-1 victory over West Ham at the London Stadium to give Arsenal’s top four hopes a huge boost. Odegaard was handed the captaincy once again after being given the resonsibility following Alexandre Lacazette’s recent injury.

And he displayed his leadership qualities again during the win over West Ham – and Redknapp thinks the Norwegian is “almost a manager on the pitch” for Arteta and should be handed the armband permanently.

Arsenal sent transfer warning

Stan Collymore thinks Arsenal will need to “get to the Promised Land of winning trophies in the next couple of years” in order to keep hold of young stars Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli.

The Gunners have strengthened their grip on a Champions League place next season with their win over West Ham, but regularly qualifying for Europe’s premier competition may not be enough to keep the club’s best players at the Emirates for the long term, according to Collymore. The former Liverpool forward has sent a transfer warning to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta as he spoke about what the club will need to do to keep the players in north London.

Collymore says Smith Rowe, Saka and Martinelli “will end up being the real deal” and could become targets for some of the top teams in the world if “in seasons to come Arsenal don’t get into the top four”.

Saliba’s Marseille message

Arsenal defender William Saliba says it would “be my pleasure to come back” to Marseille once his loan spell at the Ligue 1 side ends.

The French centre-back is set to return to the Emirates this summer but will need to displace either Gabriel Magalhaes or Ben White from the heart of the Gunners’ defence in order to get into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI. That means there are still question marks over whether Saliba’s long-term future is with Arsenal amid rumours he could seek a move away from the club.

And it appears the player himself would be happy to follow Matteo Guendouzi in making his loan move from Arsenal to Marseille permanent, after calling the Ligue 1 outfit “my club”.
