Liverpool transfer round-up: Klopp ‘eyes’ Premier League pair with Reds duo set to leave

Liverpool are set to return to action on Tuesday, when they face Leicester City for the second time in the space of the week.

The Reds overcame Leicester on penalties following a pulsating Carabao Cup clash at Anfield and will hope to repeat the trick when they head to the King Power.

Jurgen Klopp has been highly critical of the festive fixture pile-up, but his side were out of action on Boxing Day, after their clash with Leeds was postponed.

The fixture was postponed following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Leeds camp, with title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea both picking up victories.

Klopp has been handed a timely boost ahead of the trip to the east Midlands with Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcantara all back in contention.

It’s the Reds’ final game of 2021 before attention turns to the January window and whether there could be incomings.

With that in mind, here are some of the latest transfer rumours surrounding arrivals and potential exits.

Liverpool remain interested in signing West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and Leeds star Raphinha.

The two have enjoyed fine Premier League seasons and are firmly on Klopp’s radar, according to the ECHO.

The report claims Liverpool have a strong interest in both players, with eyes on bringing in reinforcements to their attacking options.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are all out of contract in the summer of 2023, and there is a feeling that Klopp could look to freshen up the forward line.

It is suggested however that it is unlikely the Reds will sanction any big transfers in January, meaning it is more likely the interest could turn to a bid in the summer.

Wirtz’s transfer plan

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller believes Florian Wirtz will remain with the Bundesliga club, despite reported interest from Liverpool.

The 18-year-old has drawn comparisons with Kai Havertz and has eight goals and 11 assists in all competitions this season.

Manchester United have also been linked, but Voller thinks Wirtz’s plan is to remain with Leverkusen – for at least the rest of this season.

“Not only because of the contractual situation – also because of the trust we have built in him and his family, we know that he will be in good hands here for a few more years,” Voller told German publication Bild.

“At some point, maybe that day will come and this club will be too small for Florian, similar to Kai [Havertz]. But that will still take a while.

“[My] wish is that Florian will stay with us for a few more years. That is important for us and for the whole of the Bundesliga. I think it’s his plan too.”

Neco and Nat set to move on

Liverpool will listen to offers for defender Neco Williams, while Nat Phillips is also expected to leave in January according to reports.

After making his debut in 2020, Williams has struggled for minutes thanks to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s astonishing form.

In total, he has made just 31 appearances in all competitions and has played only seven minutes in the Premier League so far this season.

Meanwhile Nat Phillips has impressed whenever called upon for the Reds having emerged during last season’s injury crisis.

According to the Athletic, Williams is expected to move on in the next year, while there is strong Premier League interest in Phillips ahead of the January window.
