What channel is Aston Villa vs Chelsea? Kick-off time, TV and live stream details

Chelsea’s title push has hit a bump in the road in recent weeks, and they will hope they can get back to winning ways against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have dropped points against Wolves and Everton to fall six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, though they did claim victory over Brentford during the week to progress to the last four of the Carabao Cup.

The Blues face a tough task at Villa Park, with Steven Gerrard overseeing an improvement in fortunes after replacing Dean Smith as manager of the midlands club.

Villa have won four of their six games under the former Rangers boss, and look a different side to the one comfortably beaten by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in September.

Victory for Tuchel’s men can see them draw level with second-placed Liverpool, who have seen their own game against Leeds United postponed following a number of Covid cases for the opposition.

Aston Villa v Chelsea team news

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi returned negative Covid tests, so should be in contention for the trip to Villa Park.

Ben Chilwell has also recovered from Covid, but remains sidelined through injury, with Tuchel confirming after the Brentford game that “The other two will be on the [training] pitch tomorrow if they are again negative tomorrow. Then, we need to see, they have been ill and have symptoms but we will see.”

Chelsea were able to welcome back Mateo Kovacic for the Wolves and Brentford games as the Croatian continues his recovery from illness and injury, though the midweek start was his first since October and Tuchel may decide not to risk him from the beginning.

Villa’s last match against Burnley was postponed following a number of positive Covid tests, and Gerrard has spoken of the uncertainty facing his squad ahead of Sunday’s game.

“If you’re asking for any team news or what my thoughts are on the team then you’re wasting your time because I don’t even know myself,” he explained, adding that “things are changing by the hour”.

“Right now the game, from our point of view, is 100 per cent going ahead. The rules of the Premier League is that if you have 13 fit and available players the game goes ahead.”
