Billie Piper ‘couldn’t watch past performances’ and ‘relates’ to Britney’s struggles

Billie Piper has compared her time in the spotlight to that of fellow child star Britney Spears as she opened up about her past in a candid new interview.

The 39-year-old British singer and actress was just 13-years-old when she entered the spotlight as a child actor before going on to enjoy a music career as a teen before reviving her acting career as an adult.

Billie made UK music history in 1998 when she topped the charts with her debut single, Because We Want To, margin her, aged just 15 at the time, the youngest female artist ever to hit number 1.

She rose to prominence at the same time as 39-year-old Britney who was a child actor before topping charts around the world aged 16 with her own music debut, …Baby One More Time, in 1999.

While Billie has enjoyed success as an actress – and also went on to marry radio host Chris Evans then actor Laurence Fox, and has welcomed two children with Laurence and a daughter with boyfriend Johnny Lloyd.

Reflecting on her career and past, Billie opened up to Grazia magazine where she revealed she struggled to watch her performances from her youth and

She told the weekly magazine: “For many years, I couldn’t watch myself as a child in a music video, or even hear my songs.

“But I can now, and I’m reflecting on it more fondly than I ever have done. There are mixed emotions and, honestly, it’s all a bit confused.

“I’ve forgotten a lot of it because I’ve never worked harder in my life than at that age. It makes sense to me that there’s not a great deal I can remember.”

In her chat, Billie went on to state Britney’s astronomical rise to fame, troubled years, and recent conservatorship battle was something she could “relate to”.

She said: “I could relate to loads of it, not only because of my time as a musician, but also being a woman and dealing with issues around control and misrepresentation.”

And she added: “I’m sure a lot of women can relate on a level that isn’t about being one of the most famous people in the world.”

Billie drew intense media attention when she shelved her music career in the early 2000s and embarked on her high profile romance and marriage with Chris – who is 17 years her senior.

The couple were married in 2001 when Billie was just 18 and Chris was 35 – and later separated in 2004 with their divorce being finalised in 2007.

They made headlines due to boozy days out at pubs – while Chris career became troubled at the same time.

Subsequently, Britney also experienced high profile issues – enduring a public meltdown in 2008 which resulted in her being placed under a conservatorship.

It took the singer 13 years to be free form the court ordered arrangement which saw her father placed in charge of her personal and financial affairs.

Ms Spears has vowed to reveal all about her experiences of living under a conservatorship at a later date – and has floated the idea of sitting down with Oprah Winfrey to give her side of the past 13 years of her life.
