Adele hails Oprah for ‘allowing truth to be told’ about heartbreaking divorce

Adele has hailed Oprah Winfrey for giving her a “safe space” to “tell my truth” about her divorce from Simon Konecki and not seeing her son every day.

The 33-year-old chart-topping singer has broken records with her first release from new album 30, with Easy On Me being streamed 24 million times to top of the UK charts.

Now she is sharing songs from her new album with the world as she performs at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles before speaking to Oprah in a rare TV interview.

Adele has had a tumultuous few years, which saw her marriage break down and the reality of not being a full-time parent to her son Angelo, which has seemingly hit hard.

Ahead of the CBS broadcast of Adele: One Night Only, the singer took to Twitter to express her gratitude for what will be an emotional interview.

She shared with her 26.7 million followers: “The most beautiful venue I’ve ever played. Thank you to everyone who made it possible.

“To Oprah for allowing me to tell my truth lovingly in a safe space. The whole thing was pretty overwhelming, I’ve seen it twice and cried my eyes out both times.”

Adele admitted that she feared she wouldn’t sing again, due to the coronavirus pandemic, so this moment was all the more special for her.

She continued: “Having been on such a rollercoaster the last few years and then the pandemic, it was hard to imagine being on stage singing again ever. So the fact that I got to and also got to sing my new songs, has me feeling a million things at once!

“It was also the first time my son saw me perform and I’ve never been so nervous in my life!!”

In a short preview clip released to CBS This Morning on Saturday, Oprah is seen reading lyrics back to Adele from the song Hold On, before asking: “What was going on there?”

Oprah recited: “I’m such a mess / The harder that I try I regress / I am my own worst enemy / Right now, I truly hate being me.”

Adele told her: “My friends always would say ‘hold on’ when I would feel like the lyrics in the verse. But it was just exhausting trying to keep going with it.

“It’s a process: the process of a divorce, the process of being a single parent, the process of not seeing your child every single day wasn’t really a plan that I had when I became a mum.”

Adele added: “The process of arriving for yourself every single day, turning up for yourself every single day. And still running a home, running a business so many people know what I’m talking about and I feel like that as well, I juggled those things as well.

“And I felt like not doing it any more.

“It made my feet hurt, walking through all that concrete.”
