Despite bringing in three top talents during the summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side seem as unsettled as ever, with the defence in pieces and the midfield remains fragile.
Solskjaer must act to turn things around to save United and to keep his job secure, and despite spending upwards of £125million this summer, he may have to dip into the transfer market again in January.
As well as bringing in new talent, he must make key decisions with current members of his squad which is currently causing unrest.
Here Mirror Football takes a look at the latest United transfer rumours coming out of Old Trafford.
Paul Pogba ultimatum
Should Manchester United pay over the odds to keep Paul Pogba? Let us know in the comments section.
Paul Pogba’s future has been uncertain for some time, with the midfielder out of contract next summer, but a breakthrough has finally been made as the Frenchman revealed he is open to a new deal.
However, it was come at a huge price, with French publication L’Equipe claiming that the 28-year-old does is demanding that he overtakes teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to become the Premier League’s highest-paid player.
United have been keen on securing a new deal for Pogba, but they are left with a decision to make as they weigh up whether to honour his wishes, or refuse and let the player seek a bumper contract elsewhere.
Pogba will also be ruled out for 8-10 weeks after suffering an injury with France to kick off the international break, meaning that they could be searching for a new midfielder in January, but their choice of replacement could hinge of the future of the Frenchman.
Franck Kessie eyed as reinforcement
If Pogba was to leave, AC Milan star Franck Kessie could be an ideal replacement, and the Ivorian midfielders deal also expires next summer.
According to Fichajes, Milan are yet to meet Kessie’s wage demands of £150,000-a-week and that could see him leave at the end of the season, and United could move for the midfielder who is demanding considerably less than the £400,000-a-week Pogba is looking for.
As Kessie’s contract expires in June, he is free to talk to other clubs and sign a pre-contract agreement in January, but United could offer a cut-price transfer fee to Milan to secure his services prematurely.
United are reportedly among the teams eyeing Kessie with Solskjaer’s side in desperate need of reinforcements in their midfield.
Despite starting alongside Cristiano Ronaldo against Tottenham, Cavani has been second choice to the Portuguese star and could look to move in the hunt for regular playing time.

The deal could make United favourites to sign highly-rated defender Jules Kounde, with the Red Devils just one of the Premier League sides interested in activating his £68m release clause.
