Mum of pregnant girl, 11, who was ‘raped by step-granddad’ refuses her abortion

A girl allegedly raped by her step-granddad has been told not to have an abortion by her mum.

The 11-year-old is 21 weeks pregnant after being raped by the 61-year-old man, police have claimed.

At odds with the wishes of doctors, her family have said she will not be having an abortion.

Last week it was reported that the offer of an abortion had been accepted by the family who live in Yapacani, Bolivia, but over the weekend they appear to have changed their minds.

Their lawyer Giovanni Cabello told outlet Pagina Siete: “This was a decision (to continue the pregnancy ) expressed in the morning and it is inserted in the medical history, so that the maternity ward and all its team are proceeding according to the will expressed by the family.

“The girl is in adequate condition, she is calm. What motherhood is doing is giving all the necessary care so that the mother and the unborn baby are well.

The young girl, who has not been named, was allegedly raped by her stepfather’s father, who has not been named either.

The suspect is in custody, according to local media outlet El Deber.

Ana Paola García, head of the feminist association Women’s House, said to newspaper EFE the young girl told one of her cousins “she felt strange movements in her belly”.

The Catholic church in the country publicly urged the girl not to have the termination, Unitel reported.

The 11-year-old and her unnamed 15-year-old sister had been living under the care of the suspect since last February, because their mother and father were working in the capital La Paz as a cook and as a bricklayer respectively.

The 11-year-old was determined to be 21 weeks pregnant after an ultrasound was performed by doctors.
