Perrie Edwards ‘tried to quit Little Mix in 2019 but decided to hold off due to tour’

Perrie Edwards reportedly wanted to walk away from Little Mix in 2019.

An insider has claimed that the X Factor star revealed that she was wanting to step away from the girl group – a year prior to Jesy Nelson leaving.

The blonde – who recently became a first-time mum – is said to have decided to put the breaks on her departure as she wanted to tour with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Jade Thirlwall and Jesy for a final time.

But the band’s Confetti tour was put on hold amid the Coronavirus pandemic – meaning that Perrie was forced to stick around longer than she intended.

Then another spanner was thrown in the works when Jesy announced she was quitting the girl group in December 2020.

“This idea that everyone was happy in the band prior to Jesy leaving is a smokescreen,” a source told The Sun.

Detailing what happened, they shared: “Perrie actually told the band she was thinking about leaving in 2019 which prompted a sit down with management.

The singer held off as she planned to leave after the band’s Confetti tour

“In the end she agreed it wasn’t the right time and they talked about the Confetti tour which was delayed due to Covid – it was known that after the tour Perrie would bow out of the group.”

The Mirror has contacted a representative for Perrie for comment.

The bombshell comes amid reports that Little Mix is set to announce they are splitting up in just a couple of weeks time.

Trouble has been brewing for the ladies for the past year after 30-year-old Jesy sensationally left the group after her mental health deteriorated during her time in the spotlight with the band.

But things got even worse in recent weeks after Jesy launched her debut solo career and became engulfed in a cultural appropriation storm which set her on a collision course with her former bandmates.

Sources told The Sun on Sunday that Little Mix’s remaining members – Jade, Leigh-Anne and Perrie – are throwing in the towel to pursue solo careers of their own.

The source said: “There has been a lot of speculation about the future of Little Mix but it is now very clear that the end of the road has been reached.

“A date is set to announce the split. The upcoming tour is going to be a farewell to their fans.”

It is also suggested the band will formally break the news to their fans next month.

The Mirror has contacted a representative of the band for comment.

News of a possible split comes after a week of negative headlines surrounded Jesy who has been battling accusations that the music video of her debut solo single, Boyz, amounts to cultural appropriation.

Several music fans have accused the singer of attempting to appropriate black culture and history for her own gain since the video came out.

Little Mix star Leigh-Anne found herself embroiled in the furore after a TikTok user named NoHun claimed she had sent a direct message to him urging him to “do a video about [Jesy] being a blackfish”.

Jesy herself has attempted to dismiss claims she had utilised black culture to promote her own music.

In an interview with Vulture last weekend, as the backlash began, she insisted: “I’m very aware that I’m a white British woman; I’ve never said that I wasn’t.

However the backlash refused to subside – and was intensified when Jesy’s Boyz collaborator Nicki Minaj attempted to defend her by branding the remaining Little Mix members “clowns”.

Many fans noted that Jesy laughed along when Nicki addressed the controversial backlash – but also noted she didn’t directly address the backlash herself.
