Gogglebox fans upset as tribute to late stars ‘misses out Pete McGarry’

Gogglebox fans were left moved and upset over a tribute to some of the late stars of the series that aired on Friday night.

The hit Channel 4 show has seen a number of participants sadly pass away in 2021 with Andy Michael and Mary Cook both passing away last month at the ages of 61 and 92 respectively.

Fellow regular star Pete McGarry also passed away this year – with the star dying following a battle against cancer at the age of 72 in June.

Friday night’s episode of the show paid tribute to Andy and Mary as the series aired for the first time since winning a National Television Award on Thursday.

At the end of the Celebrity Gogglebox: Black to Front special on Friday, a photo of Mary and Andy was displayed alongside with the caption: “In loving memory” and along with the year of their birth and of their death.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the tribute, with one writing: “Lovely tribute memorial for Mary and Andy Gone but never forgotten #Gogglebox #CelebrityGogglebox.”

However some viewers questioned why Pete wasn’t included in the tribute section of the show.

The show also paid tribute to Andy Michael

One fan took to Twitter to write: “Nice tribute to Mary and Andy. Pete also died or did he get a tribute in the last series? #gogglebox”.

And another commented: “#Gogglebox @Gogglebox very moving tributes for Mary Cook and Andy Michael’s, but you left out Pete.”

Gogglebox did in fact pay tribute to Pete with a photo of the late star being shared alongside the words “In loving memory” and again with the dates of his birth and death.

On Thursday night, Gogglebox won the Factual Award at the 2021 NTAs with the cast on hand to collect the gong.

Show favourite Julie Malone paid tribute to four of her co-stars who have passed away over the past couple of years – June and Leon Bernicoff.

She said: “On behalf of all the Gogglebox families I just want to say thank you for nominating us for this award.

“And on a sadder note, nominate it to all the people we’ve lost over the past 18 months and two years.

“That’s Andy, Pete, Mary, and everybody’s favourite grandma June who is now reunited with Leon.”

June passed away in May 2020 at the age of 82 – while her husband Leon died in December 2017 at the age of 83.
